10/11/10 - Reading Lights?

In this lesson we discussed lighting and it's effects, we were given a little segment of a director name Federico Fellini.
"Light is everything. It expresses ideology, emotion, colour, depth, style. I can efface, narrate, describe. With the right lighting, the ugliest face, the most idiotic expression can radiate with beauty or intelligence."
- Federico Fellini

We looked a clips from Vera Drake and Collateral and discussed how the use of lighting made us feel about the scene and what you would think the theme of the movie is and it''s setting just through it's lighting. I also learnt about 'The Male Gaze' and how they use lighting to show that the male is in control and how the female is subservient to him, under control in a way.
To conclude I had to write a paragraph on light is used to create meaning which is below;
"Light is a very important tool in film and photography. It can be used to express the  emotion and ideology of a character or the background/setting itself. For example when low lighting is used on a character it may represent evil thoughts or a mysterious personality. It can also be used as a narration tool,  it can be used to assist the acting in getting the emotions and mood of the scene across to their audience."
